Sean Finter

Global Director & Founder of Barmetrix

Sean Finter has been described as one of the most creative minds in the hospitality industry and continues to be the driving force behind the small company with HUGE plans! Sean has an extensive 16 year background in the hospitality industry,
having worked with some of the world’s most successful hospitality operations in North America, UK, Europe and Australia. Prior to founding Barmetrix, he has worked in most capacities in the industry including bartending, management, consultancy and owning his own bar/restaurant. Sean’s entrepreneurial agility and passion for the hospitality industry has since led him to establish a business system that not only increases profits for stakeholders, but also creates a range of new opportunities for management and job satisfaction for all staff in the organization. Sean is quoted saying – “For far too long this industry has been viewed as a risky investment, a dead end career for management, and a stepping stone to bigger and better things for front line staff”. Since 1999 Sean has worked with hundreds of businesses to dramatically change not only their bottom line but also their perspective, proving that this industry can be consistently profitable, rewarding and exciting to be a part of at all levels.

After gaining some valuable hands-on experience in North America and the UK, Sean began as a consultant working with distressed businesses in the late 1990’s in Sydney, Australia. He quickly gained a reputation for turning struggling businesses around at a remarkable pace by focusing primarily on back of house controls and staff training. He assembled and trained an elite team of specialists and the Finter Group was born. “Every business needs guidelines and processes. Ours were very clear and reasonable. We then channeled all of our energy to creating an outstanding customer experience. Once we had a strategic plan and the right people on board, success was inevitable"

"Our next challenge was creating an entire suite of tools that the industry was missing (and collectively suffering from as a result). It seemed ludicrous that such a high risk industry with an extraordinary staff and management churn rate was left to fumble along with such primitive and inadequate tools". Sean’s extensive research showed that the methods for inventory control and staff induction/training had not kept pace with the vast changes the industry had under gone in recent years. After testing every product on the market he came to the conclusion that he would need to create his own purpose built operating systems. The addition of an in-house software development team to work side by side with his team of consultants was the birth of Barmetrix and a new level of thinking in our industry.

Barmetrix firmly believes that you "can’t improve what you can’t measure". Their proactive approach to profit enhancement using industry first tools quickly attracted the attention of the top operators in the country. The same strategies that made struggling businesses flourish also took successful businesses to a whole new level of profitability and satisfaction.

By 2003 Sean had fully integrated back of house consulting with front of house training and coaching. Barmetrix began working with owners, management teams and front line staff on a regular frequency. This holistic approach was again an industry first. “Before we arrived in the market, planning, management education, staff training and effective consultancy was simply not affordable to the average hospitality outlet. We have changed that and brought a unique system to the market that allows our clients an edge that can make all the difference”, Sean says.

When asked his plans for the future, "I began this business with a global vision in mind. It has taken us the better part of a decade to build the platform and systems that we have now. We are now trading in several countries and have begun to sell franchises. I look forward to sharing the experiences and success I have had in my career with hundreds of Barmetrix franchisees. We are really just getting started!"

Ray Walsh

Global Director of Operations

Barmetrix has two major advantages; its people and its technology. Ray Walsh is a major contributor in both of those areas. In addition to living up to his description as, “the wizard behind the curtain that keeps producing all of the tools

the rest of the team can dream up", Ray also possesses a great sense of humor and a level headed management style.

With an Honors Degree in Computer Science from University College Cork in Ireland, Ray has spent time residing in both Korea and Australia. With over ten years experience working in technology, Ray started his career with Fujitsu working as a software engineer, working primarily in the area of smart card development. Throughout his career Ray has gained extensive knowledge in areas such as desktop development, web development, database design and software security.

Ray joined the Barmetrix in 2003 where he took the reigns as IT Manager and quickly became a leader within the organization.

Nobody would argue that developing an entire suite of software tools would be difficult. The real challenge for Barmetrix was that the size and scope of their projects meant that the development house needed to be brought to the bar – not the other way around. Enter our Irish IT Genius! Ray and his team have spent (what seems) a lifetime in bars, clubs and nightclubs getting these tools to work flawlessly. Unfortunately for our IT Team, the bars were usually closed when they were on site.

Ray continues to oversee the development of new Barmetrix products and support of existing ones. He is also very active in our global roll out plan working closely with Sean Finter (Global Director and Founder) to expand into North America and Europe.

Ray has recently been named our global Director of Operations and has also been made a partner in the Barmetrix business. Now he is referred to as Mr. Walsh!

Jason Jelicich

Regional Director - Australasia

For nearly two decades Jason Jelicich has been a leader in the bar & beverage industry. His enthusiasm and passion for the industry has given him a large influence over the development of professional bartending both in
Australia and around the world. Widely recognised as an authority in the areas of staff development, bartender training systems, implementation and bar design, Jason has made it his personal mission to improve the quality and standard of service in the bar industry. Starting his career behind the bar in the late 80’s, Jason became an award-winning cocktail and flair bartender in the early 90’s, winning a number of national and international titles. Jason founded his first company Speedpour in 1997, which broke the mould of the traditional bar schools by offering ‘street-smart’ bartender training – and building it up to a turnover of 100 trainees per week.

In 2000, Jason negotiated what was then the southern hemisphere’s largest bartender training contract with Diageo– The Perfect Serve Program – training over 5,000 bartenders and managers over the following two years.

In 2002, Jason began working closely with Sean Finter (Founder and Managing Director of Barmetrix) and quickly became an integral member of the fledging Barmetrix team in Australia. Merging Speedpour into Barmetrix, the partnership of Finter and Jelicich is one that continues to push the envelope in our industry. The two entrepreneurs have a unique chemistry and complementary skills that year after year deliver valuable innovations to the industry.

In recent years, Jason has played a key role in the development of PROtrainer, an automated bartender training system that is destined to revolutionize the way bartenders are trained and inducted into a venue. “PROtrainer fills a massive gap in our industry. It offers owners transparency, managers leverage and staff the information and training they have been lacking to prosper in their position. When you add to this that it is fun and easy for staff to use we knew we had a winner!” Jason says.

In 2006, Jason became the General Manager of Barmetrix Australia when Sean Finter headed to North America to set up several offices. Managing both the Inventory and Training divisions was a natural progression for Jason. His depth of knowledge in both back of house and front of house training makes him an ideal leader in such a diverse company.

Jason continues to be a major contributor to the many innovations that Barmetrix brings to the industry. His enthusiasm is contagious and his knowledge vast, making him one of the best public speakers in the area of hospitality in the world.

Jason is also a founding contributor of Australian Bartender Magazine and has authored the industry ‘bar bible’, The Modern Bartender.

Kit Andrew

CEO – Barmetrix Canada

Kit was literally “born in the industry” growing up living above (and working within) a family run restaurant. Kit started his professional hospitality career in June of 1994 at the age of 20, opening his first pub in Schomberg, Ontario.
His retail hospitality business soon grew to four very profitable locations in the central Ontario region, becoming the largest independent beer sales account in the area and employing over 100 staff.

After experiencing a great deal of success in the pub business, Kit expanded his horizons to include a hospitality media company called TAPS Media. This now boasts a national consumer pub and bar magazine that has grown to a national circulation of 21,000 copies, and a radio show.

In the winter of 2005, Kit was looking for his next challenge when he was introduced to the Barmetrix business system. Kit began utilizing some of the practices in his own establishments and instantly experienced astounding results. “Having been a successful operator for many years I was blown away by the value that these systems brought to my business. So much so, that I had to be involved,” Kit recalls.

He quickly realized the massive growth potential for Barmetrix in the North American market and was eager to not only be a part of it, but also - a major player.

Kit made his excitement and intentions known to Sean Finter (Global Director and Founder) and soon after plans began to launch Barmetrix across Canada. After months of planning and training, Kit Andrew was named CEO of the Canadian venture by the Barmetrix Board of Directors. He has since sold his interest in his retail hospitality operations to take a major partnership position in Barmetrix and its growth in the Canadian market.

Over the last 2 years an impressive foundation has been laid and Barmetrix Canada has not only created an strong corporate business delivering the Barmetrix services to the Canadian market but the company has also begun to sell franchises under Kit’s guidance.

Kit has now built up a strong management team around him and is positioned to roll out a dynamic national business.

Matt Rolfe

Director of Sales and Operations

Matt Rolfe is a highly driven, proven sales professional with over eight years experience in sales and customer relationship management. Throughout his career spent with companies such as Labatt/Inbev and Bacardi, Matt has always
been a stand out performer. He has proven to be as good a teacher as he is a student, and he now leads Canada’s top team of hospitality consultants in implementing the Barmetrix systems and philosophies with a wide range of clients.

Matt's industry knowledge and experience has served him well in his role as Director of Sales and Operations for Barmetrix. His background in sales and account management has established him as a leader in what is a highly specialized and unique role.

In addition to leading the team at Barmetrix Canada, Matt is also responsible for identifying new business prospects, account acquisition and key client management. Matt recalls a phone call with Sean Finter (Global Director and Founder) from Sydney, Australia in his first month on the job. He said that he had always been proud to sell these services. “You will likely be the only person to knock on a bar operator's door this year that can put tens of thousands of dollars into their bank account. What more could you ask for in a sales role?!”

Ongoing management of the ever expanding operations team is a full time role in itself. Matt spends his time creating profitable partnerships and providing consultative solutions to achieve our key focus – increasing client profitability! This is a role Matt seems to have been born for.

Matt is described by his colleagues as a true professional with a tremendous work ethic. His no-nonsense approach in assisting his clients to strengthen their business, and his desire to over deliver on clients' expectations makes him a perfect fit for the Barmetrix team.

Anthony Ciavarella

Regional Director – UK

“Not cool enough to be a bartender, too cool to be a geek”… this is Anthony’s response when asked, “why Barmetrix?” After graduating from Sydney University with a degree in robotic
engineering and an itch to travel “Ant” worked a summer in Paris and a couple of ski seasons in the French Alps as a chalet host before ending up in London working for trendy media haunt Soho House as a waiter then quickly, manager. It was here he met the CEO of a dotcom (pre bubble-burst) who became his new boss and so began his career in Information Technology as a geek.

Fast forward a few years and to the top IT outsourcing firm in London where he was the Technical Operations Manager which gave him a great insight into small business and the incentive to do something about creating his own.

Barmetrix by this stage was in the process of expanding globally and had begun looking for the right person to take Barmetrix to London. Ant was introduced to Barmetrix in Australia through his brother in Sydney who knew the company well. He was immediately inspired by the passion, enthusiasm and expertise of the Sydney team and the product they had created. That was over 12 months ago now and he could not be happier with his decision to head up Barmetrix in the UK. The value and service that Barmetrix provides to hospitality stakeholders is unprecedented and the team behind it all make it an irresistible proposition for anyone interested in bringing control and efficiency to their business.

Ant aims to bring some of his personal values to the operation in London. He likes to keep fit, save the environment and is a keen cyclist. You will see all Barmetrix employees cycling between London jobsites before long. As with all Barmetrix key management Ant has drive, passion, enthusiasm and strives for excellence while maintaining good humour at all times.

Angus Winchester

Director of Training

Despite his youthful good looks, Angus is a veteran bartender of over 19 years in the trenches of Hospitality. From humble beginnings at a club in Oxford while being a student there he has risen to the heights of being headhunted
by Diageo, James Bond and Salvatore Calabrese to run their bars, to having founded his own company, the near legendary International Playboy Bartenders, which was among the UK’s hottest and best regarded On-Premise Consultancy. More recently he moved on and founded Alconomics, working more internationally.

Variously described as “a walking encyclopaedia of cocktail knowledge”, and an “ambassador of excellence”, in his years in the Drinks and Hospitality industry, Angus has served drinks to scumbags and stars, managed and trained bar teams, worked in great bars and drank in better ones. He has written for many industry publications in the UK, Germany, Holland, China and Australasia, been featured in national newspapers and glossy magazines around the world and collected an impressive amount of books on every aspect of spirits and cocktails. He has sold alcohol one drink at a time to customers and cases at a time to bars and suppliers. He has inspired good bartenders and deflated bad ones whilst assisting many suppliers to understand better their customers.

These experiences have led Angus to develop a range of training plans for retailers and on-premise projects for drinks companies, intended to promote bartending as theatre, grow recognition for bartenders as professionals and create profitable Beverage Programs. A natural and entertaining trainer and speaker, Angus lives “Bar Culture” and is a walking encyclopaedia of the stories and myths that surround every drink. He acts as an Ambassador for the Modern Professional Bartender, travelling the world hosting training sessions and tastings. Most recently he has been General Manager of award-winning Trailer Happiness in London and Head Bartender of Salvatore at Fifty.

Over the past two years Angus has not only formed a strong alliance with Barmetrix but has become an integral part of the organization by recently being named Director of Training for our international training division. He brings a level of excellence and professionalism that is unrivalled. Angus’ new mission is to roll out the Barmetrix suite of training tools around the world.

Gary Lord

Franchise Systems and Training Coordinator

Gary Lord was born and bred in South Australia where he studied and worked in mechanical engineering.

In 1995 Gary was looking for a new challenge and left the engineering field to study and work in the hospitality industry. Two years later he would be offered an exciting role on the opening team of a new resort as Food and Beverage Manager. He excelled in management and thoroughly enjoyed the chance to work with people and solve problems.

In 1998 Gary began a specialist role in recruitment. He spent the next 6 years as a regional manager taking on poor performing offices and rebuilding them into profitable territories throughout the Gold & Sunshine Coasts (QLD), the Northern Territory and eventually NSW. Gary’s track record for turning around businesses was nothing short of impressive.

In 2004 Barmetrix began recruiting some top talent of their own. With international expansion on the horizon, we needed to secure some proven professionals and Gary Lord certainly fit the bill. Gary learned the Barmetrix business from the ground up working with the team at our Sydney, Australia office. In addition to servicing a range of the company’s key clients and being involved with our R&D team to further develop the Barmetrix suite of software tools, Gary initiated and oversaw our extensive process of documentation and systems development.

When Barmetrix launched operations in North America in 2006 it was Gary who lead the charge for us setting up systems and training a new management team. “To both launch a business and transplant a special brand like Barmetrix required a passionate professional; Gary Lord hit one out of the park!” recalls Kit Andrew, CEO Barmetrix Canada.

Gary has become a key player of our Global Expansion team and a stellar example of the type of person that Barmetrix has had the great fortune to attract over the years. His dedication, passion and talent make him one of the best in the business.

Roger Truman

Senior Business Consultant

Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, Roger came to Australia in 1991 after serving four years in the New Zealand army. Roger immediately entered hospitality and realized his passion for the industry and his potential to excel.

Roger developed a thirst for industry knowledge while working for some of the country's top bars and restaurants. After gaining valuable experience travelling and working in various bars around the world, Roger returned to Sydney to become the Training Manager at one of the country's top entertainment complexes, Sydney’s Star City Casino.

After several years with Star City, Roger joined the team at Barmetrix where he immediately had an impact. He is one of the few people in the industry that is truly an expert in conducting staff training and consulting on business systems. “Only a handful of people in our industry, Roger included, can generate a full set of reports on a bar that trades 1M/month, run a meeting with a senior management team of one of our highest profile clients and then execute a high impact training session with 50 bartenders… all in the same day! He is extremely talented and has the energy of 5 men,” comments Sean Finter.

Over the years Roger has built a wealth of experience in both front of house staff training and back of house systems and procedures. His natural business sense, infectious sense of humour and positive outlook towards learning and teaching make him a perfect fit for his role.

As a senior member of the team, Roger continues to drive innovation in our industry, support new members of the Barmetrix team and is passionate about helping key clients achieve their business goals. It goes without saying that Barmetrix and its clients certainly benefit from Roger’s wisdom and enthusiasm.
