My friend, CEO Mike Maddock, offers a fascinating perspective on where entrepreneurship collides with established business:

“The more you know, the less likely you are to see possibility when it comes right up in front of you.”

His take on this double-edged sword is simple. On one hand, when you dig in your heels you become an expert on your own business; however, with that expertise comes a little bit of tunnel vision.

See how Mike carves out a space for innovation in any business.

Onward and Upward!

Your customers don’t wake up in the morning hoping for another mediocre experience. We all crave something above average.

Yet, common business wisdom is to “under promise and over deliver.” The Top 1% of businesses in the world, however, choose to Over Promise and then Deliver.

Disney for example boldly advertises “The Happiest Place on Earth” and then rallies each staff member, every day, to deliver… and they usually do. And sure, you’re not Disney, but what could you do faster, bigger, smaller, louder, brighter, funnier, etc. than anyone else?

Once you’ve figured that out, how could you let the world know about it? And then, what would you need to do to increase your chances of delivering on that promise?

I would love to hear your answers in the comment section below,

It always amazes me how quickly people adapt to or recover from major unforeseen circumstances forced upon them. Losing their income, getting hurt, or having something significant taken away from them.

What I find even more impressive is that some people undertake dramatic changes proactively. Change for the sake of growth, not just survival.

After watching a friend achieve incredible things year after year, I asked him what his formula was.

He said it was simple: He would set his sights on something, lock himself in a room and write down the answers to these 6 questions:

WHAT is my ultimate outcome? (write down EXACTLY what “success” means)

WHEN do I expect that outcome? (a specific deadline)

WHO are the three people I need to convince to help me? (people you know or can get to)

WHERE can I gain the time to invest? (what do I need to quit doing)

WHY is this worth making the sacrifices that it will take? (is it worth it)

HOW do I get started? (list your first 5 steps)

He described the power of aspirations committed to written goals.

However, he warned me that going through this process also caused him to abandon many ideas.

When it didn’t, he emerged from that room with the blueprint necessary to accomplish his goals.

His formula has worked for me on many occasions.

Perhaps it will work for you?

To your success,

My wife and I attended our daughter’s spring carnival last week. We and hundreds of other parents packed into a gym to see a three-hour showcase of song, dance, gymnastics, and jump rope.

It was a wonderful demonstration of new skills acquired through months of hard work and early mornings, all made possible by the generous teachers who gave their extra hours to help our children grow.

During the show, I noticed many of the kids were distracted by front-row parents staring at their phones instead of watching the stage. Those parents were fully engaged while their own children were performing, but checked out on the rest of the kids.

Not only were those parents stingy with their attention— they were stingy with the applause those kids had worked so hard to earn.

While I doubt the volunteers who gave up dozens of early mornings with their own families had grand illusions of being carried out of the building on the shoulders of grateful parents, I was surprised to see that only a few parents took the time to say “thank you.”

Our attention, applause, and gratitude are free to distribute, and are amongst the most valuable contributions we can make.

Last week was a reminder that I can be much more generous in my own distribution, and I will make an effort to do so!

We meet thousands of people in a lifetime, yet can only recall the select few who make an impression.

Most human exchanges are puddle-deep. Great storytellers have an ability to take us deeper, opening a door to something meaningful.

And then there are those with the courage to be vulnerable—telling their OWN story, putting themselves out there, and in doing so, creating a safe place for others to do the same.

We all have a lifetime of experiences: wonderful triumphs, heartbreaking tragedies, and dark secrets—all typically marked “not for public consumption.”

This 12-minute TED Talk is (sadly) a common story, told by a brave and talented storyteller.

Have a look around the room you’re in now… do you know the story of the person sitting next to you?

I was asked the other day what piece of advice had made the biggest impact on my career. I instantly flashed back to a coffee shop in Sydney, Australia in 2001…

I was a couple of years into running my first business; I was working hard but felt my wheels spinning. I knew I needed help.

I reached out to a person I respected and asked for a meeting. He listened to my story and then asked just two questions.

First: What did I think was the key challenge holding me back?

Second: What I had read over the last year on that subject?

I didn’t expect the second question, and suddenly felt exposed.

I explained that I was “time poor” running my growing small business and juggling everything else I had going on. That there had been no time to sit around and read books.

He laughed and said, “Then get used to your life the way it is!” He continued, “Seriously, I hear from people struggling all the time about how busy they are. Do you think that people running companies 1000 times the size, with larger families and more responsibilities to their communities, have any more time on their hands to learn than you do?”

His words nearly knocked me off my chair.

I’ll never forget his next line: “So let me get this straight. You don’t have a few hours to invest in yourself studying best practice, but you are looking for someone to take time out of their day to share their experience or provide you with a book summary?!”

To my surprise, he did offer his help. But only after I helped myself first.

The meeting ended cordially and I sat in the café for a long time on my own.

In that moment I committed to a lifetime of weekly study. I am 12 years in and have kept that promise to myself.

I would love to hear the best advice you have received in the comment section below,

Last week, in my post about “breaking out,” I urged you to have NO down time.

This caused a flood of e-mails to my inbox challenging the idea. (The purpose of my blog is to start a conversation… mission accomplished!)

The larger point of “no downtime” wasn’t to clutter your schedule with busywork; it was to highlight the tremendous correlation between personal discipline and personal success.

Great things happen when we do things ON PURPOSE and WITH PURPOSE. We’ve all known someone incredibly talented who is surpassed by someone possessing a little more discipline; these people know that unstructured time doesn’t have to equal “down” time.

Of course we need to create mental space and free time to recharge, to access our creative minds, even within the “no downtime” mindset. Personally, I get the best results when I block time out in my schedule and interrupt my normal pattern. Here are my favorite ways to unlock creative potential:

Change my medium. I turn off my computer and use pen & paper to sketch out my ideas.

Change my start time. Some of my best work lately has come at a coffee shop, 6 AM, with Pearl Jam blasting into my headphones.

Change my scenery. Every summer, I spend a month or so on the road with my family. With my laptop I can work from anywhere, and draw a fresh mindset along with my change in surroundings.

In a world where time-wasting and procrastination have never been easier, we all need to figure out our own formulas for optimizing output. Time is our most precious resource!

What are your strategies for making the most of your time? Share in the comments below!

Most are ready to quit their jobs altogether and start new ones.

For many, though, the JOB isn’t their biggest problem— their job PERFORMANCE is.

One of my early employers, Mr. Wilson, gave me some advice I still value: “Do more than you are paid to do, and then you will get paid more for what you do.” I’m still a big believer in ‘lifting from where you stand.’ Do your best work daily, despite the circumstances.

Stop waiting for the PERFECT opportunity to try your hardest and deliver your best work.

IGNORE that voice that says, “Why should I do more, when they don’t pay me what I’m already worth?” It’s a trap so many are stuck in!

INVEST in yourself. You may not own the business, but you do own the experience and outcome. Becoming indispensable pays major dividends.

If NOW is your time, I suggest the following steps:

No Down Time. If you’re at work 8-10 hours a day, produce 8-10 hours a day. That would give you a competitive advantage over 90% of the workforce.

Go Over And Above. Take on a “side project” that the business needs, figure out how to get it done and deliver results.

Fail Forward. Breaking out is not easy, and the key is to KEEP TAKING STEPS DAILY. Business, like life, is about momentum.

I’ll be doing the same on my end!

“The next three years are going to be ugly… But PLEASE don’t waste a good recession!”

That was the opening line of a business seminar I attended a few years back. The speaker went on to explain that most companies go into a state of paralysis during recessions and “wait out the storm.” He encouraged us, at the very least, to retool our businesses so we’d be prepared to hit the ground running when the market stabilized.

I took his advice to heart, and this is what the team at Barmetrix has been up to:

We rebuilt our proprietary software suite from the ground up to embrace new technologies.

We launched Barmetrix Pulse, an interactive communication and collaboration system to educate all team members.

We signed contracts with international beverage companies, ensuring us great exposure in North America and beyond.

We tapped Matt Rolfe as our new CEO, ready to lead the company forward.

We equipped our franchisees with a new toolbox, enabling them to help clients beyond just inventory control.

Now Spring has sprung, and we are out of the gate swinging! We’ve rebooted our franchise system to prepare for 150 new franchise partners in North America.

For starters, let me introduce our two new franchise offices in Louisiana & British Columbia:
