I went to dinner on Saturday night with my wife and a wonderful couple to celebrate their recent engagement.
However, the service at the restaurant was a train wreck! I thought at times that I was on a prank TV show.
Here is how it went down:
Strike #1 – We arrived just prior to our 7:30 reservation but were seated on the patio because our requested table was not ready. I ordered a beer, took one sip and nearly spit it out! The rim of my glass was covered with cigarette ashes. No apologies from the bartender, who simply muttered a dismissive, “Huh, that’s weird.”
Strike #2 – Despite the restaurant being half empty (which raised the question of why our table had not been ready), our party of 4 was asked to share 2 menus because they were running low.
Strike #3 – Feeling very hungry 90 minutes after we ordered our mains, my wife was told that what she ordered had been SOLD OUT!? (I am not a baseball expert, but I am pretty sure you only normally get 3 strikes?)
Strike #4 – When our food finally arrived, the waitress sheepishly set down my friend’s meal and apologetically said, “I am sorry, it doesn’t normally look this way.” It was inedible — 80% fat, 20% meat. Not fit for a dog…
Strike #5 – The manager offered to “make it right” by buying us a glass of their HOUSE WINE, which paled in comparison to the bottle had selected ourselves and were enjoying.
By now, our babysitter was calling to see how much longer we were going to be. We were ready to run for the exit.
This is when it got interesting: My friend pulled the manager aside and broke the whole night down for him (yes, there was more – much more). He said he would speak with the owner who was sitting at the bar, and we witnessed a rather engaged conversation from across the room.
The manager returned, stating he argued our case to the best of his ability, but that it had been decided the meal would only be discounted by 50%. We didn’t ASK for any discount. In fact, we were willing to GIVE him something: An opportunity to make it right.
My question to all of you is: WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE TO MAKE THIS RIGHT IF THE CALL WAS YOURS THAT EVENING?
