Hire People With Something At Stake

I wish it were as simple as hiring great people to make great things happen. That has never been my experience.
Setting big goals and hiring people who have something to prove is the formula that has worked universally for me.
My friend Pat Cooley often talks about “what we have at stake.” A business owner knows exactly what she has at stake: her business.
A manager knows what he has at stake: his reputation and livelihood.
But what about the people who actually DO THE WORK? You need to hire people who need to be part of something special and feel they have just as much at stake as your managers!
Sure they have to be great people, but they also have to be at that stage in their career where they have something to prove. With the right people on the bus:
-
Paint a great vision
-
Carve them a slice that is a “career maker” -
Believe in them (sometimes more than they believe in themselves)
-
Coach them BUT give them room to fail and grow
-
Hold them accountable to delivering their best
Now make sure it’s not YOU who’s in the way!
